Finding Happiness in Feral Living

Hello and welcome my fellow feral humans, those who value their freedom more than anything! I'm sharing my experiences to encourage your wild inclinations and to normalize veering from the path well traveled.

If you haven't taken the leap out of domestication yet, I encourage you to do so. Embrace the YOLO and find your peace. Life must be lived on your own terms in order to find satisfaction.

There's nothing quite as satisfying as going to bed each night knowing the day went the way you wanted it to go and that you did not let anything get in your way.

3 Actions You Can Take to Jump Start Your Feral Lifestyle

November 21, 20232 min read

“Freedom is not something that anybody can be given. Freedom is something people take, and people are as free as they want to be.” - James Baldwin

With that said, here are 3 actions you can take to jump start your Feral Lifestyle!

1. Eliminate or Delegate

To-Do List Overload

This is a fun one. Identify all the things in your life that you hate; person, place, object, activity, responsibility. Nothing is off the table.

Then, you decide if the hated thing can be eliminated. Ask yourself if the consequence of elimination is something you could live with. If so, stop dealing with it. You don’t even need to explain yourself, “I don’t wish to do that anymore” is all you need to say if you feel that you must say something.

If the hated thing cannot be eliminated, see if you can delegate it. You are not limited to friends and family, delegation is also outsourcing. If the hated thing is laundry (just an example), you could pay someone to help you.

Here is an illustration to help you decide how to reduce the items on your to-do list:

How to Decide

2. Create a “Wants” Plan

Focus on Wants

Doing things that you want to do, simply because you want to do them, is super important. As we age, we have more and more things imposed on us, that shift our wants to the bottom of the priority list. This creates a life of drudgery and it can snowball into a loss of self-identity.

This situation can be remedied, by creating a list of wants, and blocking time to address each one. The list should be written down in to-do list fashion, either on paper or electronically, so you can mark each one off as you achieve them.

3. Prioritize Rest

Rest

Make it a point to block out time in your day that is responsibility free so that you can focus on doing something to reset your mind. This could be a walk, meditation, a nap, or simply laying down and doing nothing.

On the topic of rest, statistically, most adults are not getting enough sleep. An overwhelming number of responsibilities can tempt you to cut into your sleep time, in order to complete tasks. This is the wrong approach because responsibilities and tasks never end. They are infinite. Let things go undone if it will affect your sleep.

Feral Lifestyle = Freedom

To improve your life you must be open to change. Change can be hard and it can be scary but it's the only way to have a different outcome. If you feel trapped by your situation, you are the only one who can get yourself out of it.
